Busan Highlights: A Journey to South Korea’s Seaside Gem

While I was researching places to visit in South Korea, one of the must see cities that popped out was Busan. Nestled on the southern coast of South Korea, Busan is a cosmopolitan city that blends tradition modernity and stunning natural beauty. The second biggest city in South Korea, it has the largest fish market in the country and is a bustling port city.

How to get there..

If you’re coming from Seoul, the best and the most efficient way is via the KTX train which takes about 2 hours and cost approximately $90US. By car, it takes 4 1/2 hours and plane is 45 minutes.

1. Haeundae Beach – A Coastal Paradise

First stop was Haeundae Beach. With it’s powdery white sand and clear blue waters, it’s Busan most famous beach and is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. It is home to some of the prime real estate in the city. Soak up the sun if the weather is nice or simply stroll along the beautiful coastline.

2. Gamcheon Culture Village- Busan’s Answer to Santorini

Nestled into the hillside overlooking the sea, the Gamcheon Culture Village is often compared to Santorini because of it’s colourful houses and narrow alleyways. This artistic village is home to art galleries ,street art and vibrant murals which are perfect backdrops for photo opportunities. The streets are steep and narrow, so a good comfy walking shoes is a must.

3. Jagalchi Fish Market

Even if you’re not a fan of seafood, Jagalchi is still a must visit. It is the largest seafood market in South Korea. Every sea creature you can think of (and then some!) can be found in this market. Wander around the bustling stalls filled with the freshest marine delights. Time your visit for lunch time, so you can enjoy a meal at one of the market’s restaurants. Fish market is open from 5am to 5 pm everyday.

4. Haedung Yonggung Temple

One of the most beautifully situated temple between Rocky Mountains and the deep blue sea this temple is a must see if you visit Busan. There is a three storey pagoda surrounded by lions looking out to the sea. This is a great spot to welcome the first sunrise of a New Year and make wishes for the coming year.

5. Songdo Cloudwalk

Songdo Cloudwalk connects Songdo Beach to Geobukseom Island and is a spectacular way to enjoy the amazing panoramic views of Songdo Beach. It is approximately 365meters long and stretches way out into the sea

6. Busan Street Food

There’s no shortage of delicious street food in Busan. Sample local delicacies like hotteok(sweet pancakes), tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), odeng (fish cake skewers) and pork gukbap.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Busan. It’s a captivating city, a blend of natural beauty cultural heritage and interesting people. It’s a unique mix of traditional and contemporary experiences that were beyond our expectations.
