While I enjoy being away, visiting new places and sampling different cuisine, I also love coming home and craving something home cooked, only to realise that I have nothing in the fridge or pantry. However, we did have a bit of ground beef and pork lurking in the freezer and that’s how we ended up with these IKEA Meatballs. These Swedish meatballs are quick and easy to put together (just like IKEA furniture?) and super delicious to boot.
This was a favourite when my three kids were growing up, and everyone loves them. Now my grandchildren adore them. And why not? They are tender and moist, subtly flavoured and served with a delicious creamy gravy. The secret ingredient in the gravy is would you believe soy sauce? I’m all for blond good looks, but the addition of soy sauce, turns a pale sauce into some golden deliciousness.
Yes you can get Swedish meatballs from the IKEA shops, but can I say homemade is better. I got this recipe a long time ago from a reverse engineering website (forgot the name) where they try to decode a famous/iconic recipe such as this one and ever since it has become a favourite. The soy sauce was my idea as I like to put soy sauce in everything. I think it makes the gravy better in not only in colour but also in flavour. However, If you don’t like soy sauce, you can also add a bit of gravy powder when you make the gravy. That helps as a thickener and also adds a bit of colour.
What you need to make IKEA Meatballs
- Pantry and Fridge -Beef and Pork Mince, onion, fresh bread crumbs, egg, garlic, nutmeg, mixed spice, salt and pepper and oil for shallow frying. I also like to add chilli powder for a bit of zing, totally optional.
- For the gravy- Heavy or double cream, butter, flour, stock powder, soy sauce and Dijon mustard.
Easy does it.. what could be simpler?
- Combine all the ingredients for the meatballs and shape into balls the size of golf balls. Pan fry in a little bit of oil and set aside.
- Make the gravy in the same pan that the meatballs were browned in as all the flavours are in there, just waiting for your magic touch. Melt butter in the pan and then whisk in flour. Cook into a golden paste, stirring constantly so it does not burn.
- Deglaze with water to dislodge the bits stuck to the pan, then add the rest of the ingredients. Bring to boil, add the meatballs then lower the heat and simmer until the meatballs are cooked through.
- Serve with mashed potatoes , pasta or steamed rice. If you have lingonberry jam, go for it for that extra Swedish touch.
