My kind of place is usually light and bright but I adored Restaurant Hubert at first sight. There’s a sense of drama (after all there’s a stage and a theatre) and an air of anticipation as you descend the stairwell on the way to the central dining room, where we were booked. The walls are lined with a vast collection of wine/spirits bottles and curios. Dark timber panels throughout and candlelit tables, adding to the Parisian chic vibe. It felt like starring in a bloodthirsty Quentin Tarantino directed period movie. Lucky we spruced up a bit for the occasion (a Mother’s Day treat), it’s that sort of place.
Drinks
You will be spoilt for choice of wines and cocktails to choose from. We tried the Negroni , G & T, and a Pet Nat Rosé, all pronounced excellent.
On to food..
To start we had the following:
Desserts we tried..
I was particularly excited to try the famous Creme Caramel. Yes it was good, but I think my mum’s version will be up there with Hubert’s. Here’s the recipe for Lola Maring’s Leche Flan.
And by the way, there’s a live jazz band that plays every evening. On the Tuesday night that we were there, a trio of musicians provided the ambience. Coincidentally, they played one of my favourite Beatles song called Golden Slumbers, so it was a pleasant surprise.
Service was excellent – friendly and attentive all throughout the night. Every dish we tried exceeded our expectations except for the Leek Terrine. Not that there was any thing wrong with it, just not our thing. Our party of six thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Hubert and we agreed that the standout dish were the Kimchi Gratin and Chicken Fricasseé, and one day I hope to recreate at home.
