Waterline by the Bay, Cronulla

On a gorgeous spring day, I can’t think of a better place to dine than at Waterline by the Bay,Cronulla. Tucked away in tranquil surrounds, facing the picturesque Gunnamatta Bay, it was hard to decide wether to book for lunch, where you get the stunning view of the bay or dinner where you get to enjoy the sunset. But it was lunch for us on this fine Saturday, and we were very lucky to get a table on the veranda.

To start, the Persian Prince and I shared the Western Australian Octopus which was served with Potato Foam,Balsamic Onions and Shallots. For me this was the outstanding dish of the day. Octopus can be very tricky to cook, but in this case it was done beautifully. Tender but still with a little bit of chew, I detected a hint of fennel (but I could be wrong) , it paired so well with the mini Balsamic Onions and that Potato Foam sauce was out of this world. I couldn’t let any of that silky potato foam go to waste, I used the house bread to mop it up.

For mains, we had the day’s special of Roasted Lamb Rump which was served with Couscous and Ratatouille. According to the Persian Prince, who loves Lamb, this is one of the best Lamb he’s ever had in an Australian restaurant. This is high praise coming from him, who only ever classify food as either good or bad. I had a perfectly done Scotch Fillet which did not disappoint. I love how the dishes were plated simply and without fuss. The greens and the duck fat Potatoes are not to be missed.

On to dessert, we shared the Burnt Citrus Tart which was served with a berry Coulis. I love a good citrus tart so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to sample this version. It was just okay. While the filling was great, the pastry bottom was a bit soggy, which means that when you eat the tart, it feels grainy. Maybe we just got a bad batch? And I’m just nitpicking here, as everything else we had was perfection!

To sum up, Waterline by the Bay is the perfect restaurant for a special occasion or celebration. The service was impeccable, the food delicious and the view is outstanding. For some reason, there was no Pork dish on the menu, so don’t go there if you’re after Pork. However , they have an impressive Cocktail and Wine List. So, I only got to sample the Appletini and a French Rosé which you can have by the glass which means I’ll be back soon to sample others.

Feel free to dress up for the occasion! It’s that sort of place.
